I have been using Arduino IDE for the entire time I have had my 3D Printer to modify, compile and upload my Marlin firmware. The newest Marlin 2.x.x versions has taken what seem like forever to compile using Arduino IDE can now be compiled in about a minute.

Had been using PlatformIO to compile for my old Ender as well...super easy interface and works very well...plus if something is wrong it tells you exactly what...loved it

Visual Studio Code > PlatfornmIO > Marlin Auto Build still takes time to load, if you jump the gun an start compiling before loading is complete you can get this error.
So have a little patients when using make sure all components are completely loaded.

When I last used it, you never got the little check at the bottom to compile until it was loaded I don't think. Of course, by the time you fixed up the marlin code with whatever changes you need it is most likely loaded by then anyway...

I will explain further. when I load up Visual Studio Code > PlatformIO > Marlin Auto Build most is loaded though. On occasion PlatformIO takes longer to load if you press the Build button before the the PlatformIO alien face is displayed It will fail to compile. And Visual Studio Code > PlatformIO > Marlin Auto Build will have to be shut down and reloaded before you can build the firmware. Image one Incorrect missing PlatformIO, though I can click the Marlin Build button.
Image Two Correct all loaded PlatformIO is displayed now the Marlin Build button will complete successful now.

I Click on the " m ' click on " Show ABM Panel " button then the click the " Build Button ". I have never used the little check at the bottom. Tried the little check at the bottom it appears to compile the same.
The Marlin Firmware Auto Build panel displays quite a bit on information, including board and pins.
